Panoramic X-Rays

A panoramic radiograph, also known as a panorex or panoramic x-ray, is a type of two-dimensional dental x-ray that provides a wide view of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures in the mouth. It is commonly used to assess the overall health of the mouth and to diagnose a variety of oral health conditions.

During a panoramic x-ray, the patient is asked to bite down on a specialized tool that helps the operator position the head in the right position. The patient is also asked to remain still during the x-ray. Once the x-ray is taken, it is usually displayed digitally on a computer monitor or processed onto regular x-ray film.

Panorex films have several uses in dentistry. They are often used as part of the initial and final dental records for orthodontic assessments, to diagnose wisdom teeth impaction, to assess the jaw joints, and to detect signs of oral cancer. They are also useful for diagnosing advanced periodontal diseases, which are infections of the gums and surrounding structures that support the teeth.
